About the Connecticut Permit Test

The Connecticut permit driving test is made up of 25 total questions. Of those 25 questions, individuals will need to answer 20 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 80%.

Individuals must be at least 16 years of age to take the Connecticut permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the Connecticut permit test:

  1. Gather your documentation
  2. Complete a form with parent consent
  3. Schedule your test appointment and pay fee ($40)
  4. Complete application form
  5. Pass a vision exam
  6. Pass a knowledge test
  7. Pay the permit fee ($19)
  8. Get your permit

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the Connecticut DMV, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of Connecticut, you will need to complete 30 hours of drivers ed classroom hours and at least 40 hours of supervised driving hours.

Connecticut Driving Test FAQs

There are a total of 25 questions on the Connecticut permit test.

For the CT written test, you must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly, which comes out to a total of 20 questions.

You may apply for a permit in Connecticut when you are at least 16 years old.

You can get your license in Connecticut when you have waited at least 6 months (4 months with driver education)  after you received your permit.

You can get your license in Connecticut when you have had the following supervised driving time: 40 hours.

The minimum age for a driver’s license in Connecticut is: 16 years and 4 months.

In Connecticut you will have the following restrictions on your driver’s license –

Nighttime Restrictions: 11 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Passenger Restrictions: first 6 months—no passengers other than parents or a driving instructor; second 6 months—no passengers other than parents, driving instructor or members of the immediate family.

The Nighttime restrictions will be in place until you reach the age of: 18.

The Passenger Restrictions will be in place until you reach: 12 months of license or until age 18.

In Connecticut, either driver education or home training is required for license applicants younger than 18. Permit holders may not carry any passengers aside from the person providing instruction, parents or guardians.

Time spent practice driving with a professional instructor counts toward the 40-hour certification requirement. Before an applicant who under 18 may take the driver’s test, parents or guardians must attend two hours of instruction regarding teen driving laws and related issues with such applicant.

Anyone 18 years of age or older must hold an adult learner’s permit for three months before obtaining a driver’s license.
