ParaPro Assessment Content Description
The ParaPro Assessment was created in order to satisfy the federal regulations regarding education included in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. That regulation has since been repealed and replaced with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), but still leaves the requirements in place which made the ParaPro Assessment necessary.
The ParaPro is designed to reflect the most current research available in the field of pedagogy, using the experience and professional judgement of top educators across the United States.
A committee of top educators and paraprofessionals who work with them was created in order to determine which knowledge and skills are most necessary in order to successfully assist instruction in a classroom learning environment setting.
The ParaPro Assessment is made up of 90 selected-response test questions in the core educational subjects of reading, writing, and math. Candidates are given 2 and ½ hours to complete it.
Roughly two-thirds of the test questions assess basic skills and knowledge in these areas, while the remaining one-third assesses the candidate’s ability to apply these skills in a classroom environment.

Reading (30 Questions)
The reading portion of the ParaPro Assessment tests the candidate’s ability to examine, comprehend, and interpret written information utilizing a variety of subjects and real-world scenarios. Some tools used to assess these abilities may include:
- Passages
- Graphs
- Charts
- Tables
Mathematics (30 Questions)
The Mathematics portion of the ParaPro Assessment tests the candidate’s understanding of basic mathematical concepts as well as her ability to apply them in both real-world and abstract scenarios. The main concepts covered in this section include:
- Number Sense and Basic Algebra
- Geometry and Measurement
- Data Analysis
Please note that examinees may not use calculators.
Writing (30 Questions)
The writing portion of the ParaPro Assessment tests the candidate’s ability to assist with teaching writing in a classroom setting. Questions are designed to assess how well the candidate can recognize usage errors in a student’s writing, including:
- Grammar
- Words
- Punctuation
- Parts of Sentences
- Parts of Speech
- Spelling
ParaPro Assessment Administration
The ParaPro Assessment is administered at participating school districts and are given by appointment. Candidates are encouraged to select a testing center and contact them directly in order to schedule a testing appointment. Be sure to register as soon as you have selected a testing center, since they have a limited capacity and operate on a first-come-first-served basis.
Candidates are asked to bring nothing with them other than their ID, since that is all that will be allowed in the testing room. ID verification and check-in on the day of your test will include:
- Biometric voice and photo identification
- Fingerprinting/thumbprinting
- Video surveillance
- Signature comparison

ParaPro Candidacy Requirements
Anyone who wishes to be a paraprofessional educator in a state or school district which requires the ParaPro Assessment should take the ParaPro.
ParaPro Assessment Scores
The candidate’s “unofficial” score report will be shown on his or her screen at the conclusion of the test. Official score reports will arrive about 2-3 weeks after the candidate’s test date.
Official score reports will include the following information regarding the candidate:
- Name
- Score(s)
- Pass/No Pass
- Background Information
- Educational Information
- Detailed Category Performance by Content Area
The score report groups questions into content categories. This is so the candidate is able to identify which content areas may potentially need to be improved upon.
The score report will show the total number of questions the candidate answered correctly (also known as the “raw score”) grouped by content category.
Raw score is then converted to a scaled score between 100 and 300. For most states and school districts, 250 is a passing score.
Percentile ranks are also provided on your score report. This section of the score report indicates what percentage of test takers scored as good as or lower than the test taker.
