How Old Do I Have to Be to Obtain a Georgia Class C Driver’s License?
A full-fledged Class C driver’s license is only issued to Georgia residents age 18 or older.
However, Georgia operates on a graduated licensing system, which means that you can apply for a Class C learner’s permit at age 15 and a class D provisional license at age 16.
What Are the Acceptable Documents for Establishing Identity and Residency?
In Georgia, identifying documents are arranged into three categories—documents establishing your identity, documents establishing your social security number, and documents establishing your Georgia residency.
If you are a U.S. citizen you will need to provide one document establishing identity, one document confirming your social security number, and two documents establishing your Georgia residency.
Proof of identity documents include a government issued birth certificate, a U.S. passport that is valid, a report that shows birth out of country, a citizenship certificate or naturalization, military discharge papers, or a social security administration statement containing your full name and date of birth.
Proof of social security documents include your social security card (original or copy), a W-2 or 1099 form, a paycheck stub, a tax return (state or federal), a Medicare or Medicaid card, a selective service card, or military discharge papers.
Proof of residency documents include a leasing agreement, a mortgage bill, your homeowner’s insurance policy, a utility bill (no more than six months old), a credit card bill, a bank statement, school records, or medical statements.
What Tests are Required to Obtain a Georgia Class C Driver’s License?
To be qualified for a Georgia Class C license you must pass a vision test, a knowledge (written) test, and a road (driving) test.
The knowledge test will test your ability to identify road signs and understand Georgia traffic laws.
During your road test you will be asked to perform maneuvers such as parallel parking, backing up, making a three point turn, passing other vehicles, and obeying traffic signs.
What Driver’s Education Do I Have to take for a Georgia Class C Driver’s License?
There are no driver’s education requirements for the Class C license, per se; however, most Georgia residents will obtain a Class C license through the graduated licensing system, and there are driver’s education requirements for the Class D provisional license—which immediately precedes the Class C license.
Requirements include enrolling in a Department of Driver Services approved course either in a classroom or virtual setting for at least 30 hours. You will also need at least 6 hours of on-the-road driving experience with a certified driving instructor.
What are the Driving Restrictions for a Class C Instructional Permit and a Class D Provisional License?
When you have obtained a class C instructional permit, you must only drive when a licensed driver age 21 or older is present.
Holders of a class D provisional license will be able to drive unaccompanied; however, they will not be allowed to drive between the hours of 12 a.m. and 6 a.m.
During the first six months of possessing a class D provisional license, only immediate family members will be allowed to ride with the driver.
