About the Idaho Permit Test

The Idaho permit driving test is made up of 40 total questions. Of those 40 questions, individuals will need to answer 34 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 85%.

Individuals must be at least 14.5 years of age to take the Idaho permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the Idaho permit test:

  1. Apply for your permit in person
  2. Provide proper documentation
  3. Confirm secondary school education
  4. Get consent from parent or guardian
  5. Fill out application form
  6. Pass vision test
  7. Pay fee ($18)
  8. Pass knowledge test
  9. Get picture taken
  10. Get your permit

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the Idaho DMV, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of Idaho, you will need to complete 30 hours of drivers ed classroom hours and at least 50 hours of supervised driving hours.

There are a total of 40 questions on the Idaho permit test.

For the ID written test, you must answer at least 85% of the questions correctly, which comes out to a total of 34 questions

You may apply for a permit in Idaho when you are at least 14 years and 6 months old.

You can get your license in Idaho when you have waited at least 6 months after you received your permit.

You can get your license in Idaho when you have had the following supervised driving time: 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night .

The minimum age for a driver’s license in Idaho is: 15 

In Idaho you will have the following restrictions on your driver’s license – Nighttime Restrictions: sunset to sunrise and Passenger Restrictions: licensees 16 and younger can have no more than 1 passenger younger than 17.

The Nighttime restrictions will be in place until you reach the age of: 16 (min. age: 16).

The Passenger Restrictions will be in place until you reach: 6 months of license or age 17 (min. age: 15.5) 

In Idaho, license applicants younger than 17 must have completed driver education.

There are three classes of learner’s permits — a training instruction permit for people 14.5 years old taking driver education; a supervised instruction permit for practice driving with a nonprofessional supervisor; and an instruction permit for people younger than 17 who have completed driver education and supervised driving or for people 17 and older without either driver education or supervised driving.
