What is the Journeyman Electrician Test?
Before we tell you what the test is, it might be a good idea to know what a journeyman electrician is and their responsibilities.
After an apprenticeship as an electrician or schooling to become an electrician, you have two choices you could make.
- Become a self-employed electrician like ten percent of those in the workforce.
- Get contracted by a national electrician company.
If you chose to work for a contractor, you will need to be certified and become a journeyman electrician.
From there, you can narrow your focus to commercial, industrial, or residential electric work. This is the first step you can take toward becoming a master electrician.
This is where the test comes into play. To become an officially licensed journeyman electrician, you must take the journeyman electrician test.
The exam tells a state or local electric company that you know what you are doing.
It will test your skills as well as your knowledge of the best electrical practices. This ensures that you are skilled enough to take the next step in your electrician career.
What is Tested on the Journeyman Test?
The most important tip we can share about what will be covered on the test is that it will focus on state rules, so you need to know what the best practices are in the state where you will be taking the test.
The tests are similar in length, ranging from 80 to 100 multiple-choice questions.
You are given around 240 minutes (or 4 hours) to complete the exam. There may also be some unscored questions on the exam, but you will not know which ones they are.

Journeyman Eligibility
Not everyone is eligible to take this exam. The best way to know if you are eligible is to check with your state or local licensing program and have an expert tell you what you must have completed to take the exam.
As a rule of thumb, you will likely have to have experience as an electrician for a certain amount of time (this varies depending on the state). The amount of time is usually measured in hours worked whether that be as an apprentice and/or through extracurricular classwork.
