About the Montana Permit Test

The Montana permit driving test is made up of 33 total questions. Of those 33 questions, individuals will need to answer 27 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 82%.

Individuals must be at least 14.5 years of age to take the Montana permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the Montana permit test:

  1. Schedule an appointment with driver license station
  2. Provide proper documentation
  3. Have parent or guardian present to provide consent
  4. Pay fee ($5)
  5. Pass vision test
  6. Pass written test
  7. Get your permit

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the Montana MVD, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of Montana, you will need to complete 60 hours of drivers ed classroom hours and at least 50 hours of supervised driving hours.

There are a total of 33 questions on the Montana permit test.

For the MT written test, you must answer at least 82% of the questions correctly, which comes out to a total of 27 questions

You may apply for a permit in Montana when you are at least 14.5.

You can get your license in Montana when you have waited at least 6 months after you received your permit.

You can get your license in Montana when you have had the following supervised driving time: 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night.

The minimum age for a driver’s license in Montana is: 15

In Montana you will have the following restrictions on your driver’s license –

Nighttime Restrictions: 11 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Passenger Restrictions: first 6 months—no more than 1 passenger younger than 18; second 6 months—no more than 3 passengers younger than 18.

The Nighttime restrictions will be in place until: 12 months of license or 18.

The Passenger Restrictions will be in place until you reach the age of: 12 months of license or 18.

In Montana, enrollment in or completion of driver education is required for permit applicants younger than 15.

In Montana, license applicants younger than 16 must have completed driver education.
