About the Washington Permit Test

The Washington permit driving test is made up of 40 total questions. Of those 40 questions, individuals will need to answer 32 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 80%.

Individuals must be at least 15 years of age to take the Washington permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the Washington permit test:

  1. Pre-apply for your Washington ID number
  2. Apply for your permit in person
  3. Provide proper documentation
  4. Pass vision test
  5. Pass knowledge test
  6. Get your photo taken
  7. Pay fees
  8. Get your permit

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the Washington DOL, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of Washington, you will need to complete 30 hours of drivers ed classroom hours and at least 50 hours of supervised driving hours.

There are a total of 40 questions on the Washington permit test.

For the WA written test, you must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly, which comes out to a total of 32 questions

You may apply for a permit in Washington when you are at least 15 years old.

You can get your license in Washington when you have waited at least 6 months after you received your permit.

You can get your license in Washington when you have had the following supervised driving time: 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night.

In Washington you will have the following restrictions on your driver’s license –

Nighttime Restrictions: 1 a.m. – 5 a.m.

Passenger Restrictions: first 6 months—no passengers younger than 20; second 6 months—no more than 3 passengers younger than 20 secondary enforcement.

The Nighttime restrictions will be in place until you reach: 12 months of license or age 18.

The Passenger Restrictions will be in place until you reach: 12 months of license or age 18.

In Washington, permit applicants must be enrolled in driver education; otherwise, the minimum permit age is 15.5.

In Washington, driver education is required for license applicants younger than 18. In Washington, intermediate license holders with a crash or violation history are ineligible for an unrestricted license until age 18.
