SAT Writing and Language Overview
Beginning in spring of 2024, the SAT is switching to the digital SAT. This means the writing and language test is being combined with the reading test.
The reading and writing sections are combined into the following:
- Reading & Writing Module 1: 27 questions, 32 minutes
- Reading & Writing Module 2: 27 questions, 32 minutes
The questions you will find on this section are broken into 4 different categories:
- Information and Ideas
- Craft and Structure
- Expression of Ideas
- Standard English Conventions

How many questions are on the SAT writing and language test?
On the old SAT (written SAT) there are 44 total questions.
One the new SAT (digital SAT) there are 54 total questions.
How many passages are on the SAT writing and language section?
On the old SAT (written SAT) there are 4 total passages. Each passage includes 11 multiple-choice questions.
On the new SAT (digital SAT) there are no long passages. All passages are between 25 and 150 words.
What is the time limit for the SAT writing and language section?
On the old SAT (written SAT) you will have 35 minutes.
One the new SAT (digital SAT) you will have 64 minutes.
